Legal Services for Mexican Clients
When successful Mexican companies expand to the U.S. market they face a legion of U.S. legal issues, including immigration and customs matters, labor law issues, corporate formation, contract negotiation and drafting, unfair competition disputes, and litigation. Our law firm is uniquely positioned to serve the U.S. legal needs of Mexican companies and business people.
Two of our attorneys, David Lopez and Wayne Fagan, have served Mexican clients and worked on legal teams including Mexican legal counsel for years. As co-author of a leading treatise on Mexican law and based on his work as an expert on Mexican law since 1997, David is able to communicate seamlessly with Mexican clients about complex legal matters to ensure that the legal needs of their U.S. operations are met promptly and effectively. Wayne has worked with Mexican and Latin American clients since 1990, has published articles and lectured on the structuring of international business transactions and dispute resolution between residents of Latin America and the U.S., and is an honorary member of the Colegios de Abogados de Nuevo Leon, Mexico,, a Permanent Observer to a Latin American Institute at Monterrey Tech, and co-founder and past Co-Chair of the U.S.-Mexico Bar Association. Other attorneys in our firm, including Rafael Sonsino (commercial transactions) and Brad Jones (real estate), also have provided a variety of legal services to Mexican clients.
We offer our Mexican clients direct services on legal matters within our numerous fields of practice and referral services on matters outside our areas of expertise, such as immigration law and patent law.
Examples of Direct Services
Mexican clients often find it difficult to find the right U.S. lawyer to help them on a given legal project. We provide our Mexican clients a valuable service in these situations. After consulting with our client about its legal need, we identify several U.S. lawyers who work in the particular legal field, conduct preliminary interviews of the lawyers, arrange a formal interview of the lawyers by the client, and assist the client in hiring the lawyer of its choice. We then help our Mexican clients by monitoring the work of the U.S. lawyer to make sure that the appropriate work is being performed and deadlines are met. In most cases, we do not charge our client for such referral services; rather, we can be compensated by a referral fee paid by the U.S. lawyer to our firm.
